Pictured: Keller Williams volunteers helped remove 0.03 acres of invasive arundo & 750 lbs of trash from the Cal Expo area of the Parkway.

During the month of May, 386 volunteers spent 1,025 hours on the American River Parkway! They removed 2,900 lbs of trash and 5,609 invasive plants including arundo, red sesbania and broom.

Volunteers also repaired 2 picnic tables at Sacramento Bar as part of Fair Oaks & Orangevale's Big Day of Service and helped at the 15th annual Ride the Parkway!

May 2018
Throughout the month, groups from Accenture, Blue Shield of CA, Keller Williams, National Charities League, Nestle, PG&E, and Yale joined us for river cleanups and invasive plant removal.

ARPF Champion
Volunteer of the Year

Kim Carnero

Meet Kim Carnero, our 2017 Volunteer of the Year and office volunteer extraordinaire! Kim has been volunteering in our office since 2014, and helps with our Parks Pass program as well as special event and volunteer event preparation. Read on to learn more about Kim!

Tell us briefly about yourself!
I grew up in San Francisco, CA and moved to the Sacramento area in 1997. In 2010, I remarried and moved to Rancho Cordova, which gave me the opportunity & time to really explore the American River Parkway as part of my daily morning walks.

Describe your connection to the Parkway. What does the Parkway mean to you?
I enjoy helping out in the ARPF office. It's so nice to see what a marvelous job the staff and fellow volunteers have done to keep the Parkway user-friendly so the public has a safe and peaceful environment to enjoy.

What initially drew you to ARPF? Why have you continued volunteering?
One day, I was walking the Parkway and I just happened to see a volunteer sign posted on the board next to the front entrance of the office. The staff are really supportive and make me feel very welcome to be part of their team.

How would you describe your volunteer experience? Would you encourage others to volunteer on the Parkway?
I enjoy contributing my time and effort with such a wonderful, friendly and caring staff. American River Parkway Foundation volunteers are appreciated for their work and contributing to a worthy cause!

Do you have a favorite Parkway memory or experience?
Seeing wildlife up close and personal. On one of my morning walks, I was able to see an adult male & female deer standing together. Another time, I saw two coyotes. I also enjoy seeing all the hard work of the volunteers celebrated at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The Parkway is such a valuable asset to the community that shouldn't be taken for granted.

Fire Prevention
Hot summer months bring a higher risk of wildfires to our parks and open spaces. During the months of June and July, techniques such as prescribed burns (in partnership with Sacramento City & Metro Fire Departments) and livestock grazing will be used on the American River Parkway as part of Sacramento County Regional Parks' Fire Fuel Reduction Action Plan.

Click the button below for more information, including specific dates and locations of controlled burns and grazing.

Do your part to help reduce the risk of fire on the American River Parkway!
  • Smoking is only allowed in developed picnic areas or on asphalt surfaces, golf courses and levee tops in the American River Parkway.
  • Open flame fires are not allowed and barbecuing is only permitted in designated picnic areas.
