During October, 371 volunteers contributed 1,103.5 hours to the American River Parkway. Volunteers removed 16,750 lbs of trash and 33,182 invasive plants including red sesbania, stinkwort, and Chinese tallow from the Parkway. We welcomed work groups from Visions in Education, Bayside Church, Intel, and AmeriCorps. Thank you, volunteers!

Island Cleanup

On October 25, ARPF partnered with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Air Operations Team on a training exercise to haul 16,000 pounds of debris from the islands behind Rio Americano High School. Alongside Sacramento County Parks Maintenance Workers and Rangers, 12 ARPF volunteers and staff filled 20 helicopter sling-loads in 4 hours.

A HUGE thank you goes out to all who supported this first-of-its-kind collaborative effort!

Sacramento Running Association Sacramento Running Association

This month, we're pleased to recognize the Sacramento Running Association's long-time support of the American River Parkway Foundation. The Sacramento Running Association (SRA) is a community-based non-profit that promotes the sport of running in the greater Sacramento area. The SRA spends over $1 million annually to manage events and programs to benefit local runners of all ages and abilities.

Since 2007, the SRA has donated $143,366.50 to the American River Parkway through the Parkway Foundation's trail maintenance and Adopt-A-Mile programs. The SRA has also spent the last 4 years captaining a cleanup site at Sunrise Recreation Area for the Great American River Cleanup.

In addition to financial and volunteer support, the SRA has played a role in establishing and promoting the American River Parkway as a treasured training venue for Sacramento runners by developing running routes on the Parkway's equestrian/hiking trails. Former SRA Executive Director and CIM Co-Founder John Mansoor was also instrumental in the development of the 2008 American River Parkway Plan, establishing the Parkway as a place for runners to enjoy alongside cyclists, equestrians, walkers, fishermen, kayakers and more.

SRA has garnered community support for the American River Parkway by encouraging runners to purchase Parks Passes, and by involving community partners such as Fleet Feet Sports in local events. The SRA's new series of youth cross country meets, launched in 2017, showcases the Parkway and other parks throughout the region.

In 2016, the Sacramento Running Association and the American River Parkway Foundation launched Run the Parkway, the official training run of the California International Marathon, as an event for runners to give back to the American River Parkway. In its first year, the SRA donated $15,000 from Run the Parkway proceeds to benefit Parkway trails.

We hope you join us at Run the Parkway this Sunday, November 5th as a runner or volunteer!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the American River Parkway Foundation would like to express its gratitude for your generous and thoughtful support of the American River Parkway. We appreciate the community's contributions of time, energy and financial support in caring for Sacramento's greatest asset! Photo by David Dawson Otters
