Achievements
Pictured: Oracle volunteers after a day of trail work at the Campfire Outdoor Ed Site. They braved an epic downpour to get the work done!

During the month of April, 86 volunteers contributed 299.5 hours to caring for the American River Parkway! These volunteers removed 365 pounds of trash and 7,087 invasive plants such as Red Sesbania and French Broom. We also welcomed groups from Oracle and Wells Fargo for trail maintenance days at the Campfire Outdoor Ed Site and Lower Sunrise Rec Area. Volunteers also helped support Parkway trails at Howlin' on the Parkway!

Champion

In honor of National Volunteer Week (April 23-29), this month's champion is CNN's 2013 Hero of the Year Chad Pregracke. Chad is the founder of Living Lands and Waters, an Illinois-based nonprofit that has been cleaning up America's major rivers "one river, one piece of garbage at a time" over the last 20 years. Chad grew up with the Mississippi River as his backyard and discovered a devastating amount of trash along its banks. Since then, he's worked with over 100,000 volunteers cleaning up the Mississippi and other major rivers!

Chad visited the Parkway Foundation last week to give some words of encouragement to our volunteer stewards and board members, and show his appreciation for their work. Here are our favorite memorable quotes:

  • "We are making a difference by the boat load, by the barrel, by the can."
  • "For me to come here and see all of you, I think there's a lot of unsung heroes in this country...you are making a difference."
  • "If I'm going to continue on this mission, then I need to do it bigger and better. How can I do that?"
  • "I mean, everybody asks me, how do you stay positive? It's because I know we're making a difference."
  • "Change doesn't happen fast a lot of times. It's more like a barge or a train in the fact that change starts off sometimes real slow, slow, slow, slow, but then it starts to build momentum and then it's hard to stop."

"To all of you, thank you for what you do. I don't live here, but I appreciate what you guys do."

Thank you to Steve Burns and the Responsible Battery Coalition for putting together this special presentation.

We're pleased to honor Invasive Plant Patrol Champion Bob Bloomer (pictured on the right) as our 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Bob is responsible for the 3-mile long Star-Thistle-Free zone from Cal Expo to Watt Ave, and has been volunteering with the Parkway Foundation since 1996. He's put in more than 1,200 hours removing trash and invasive plants in his 20 years as a volunteer. Thank you Bob for making a difference!

Howlin' on the Parkway

Thank you walkers and volunteers!

More than 150 walkers and volunteers came out on Saturday, April 22 to support American River Parkway trails at Howlin' on the Parkway! Participants and their dogs enjoyed a 2-mile walk along the Parkway followed by an Earth Day celebration with the Cali Love Food Truck.

After the walk, Pups competed in a costume contest featuring special guest judges Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters and Instagram's Monte the Aussie (with mom Samantha), led by MC April Potter of Megatude Media.

Proceeds from Howlin' on the Parkway benefit the American River Parkway's hiking and equestrian trail through the Parkway Foundation's Pups in the Park and Trail Maintenance programs, helping to ensure the 30+ miles of dirt trails are accessible and clear of pet waste.

Visit our office (map) to check out beautiful photos of the Parkway! Each quarter we're featuring a local photographer with a passion for the Parkway. These photographs will be available to purchase, and proceeds benefit the Parkway Foundation.

This quarter we're featuring David Dawson, photographer and volunteer extraordinaire. David has been volunteering with the Parkway Foundation since 2003 (14 years!) and has dedicated more than 446 hours over the years. He volunteers alongside the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento as a Mile Steward of mile 6 north.

A quote from David on the value of the Parkway:
"The American River Parkway, close to home, meets my need, as described by John Muir who said, 'Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.'"
