Champion
Nestle Waters

Nestle Waters

This month, we're pleased to highlight Nestlé Waters (North America) as our volunteer champion. Nestlé Waters has supported the American River Parkway Foundation since 2015 with water donations, volunteer hours, and grant funding for programs.

Nestlé's Sacramento crew has volunteered at the Parkway Half Marathon, Summer Solstice, and numerous river cleanups. In addition to their own volunteer hours, Nestlé has enabled us to deploy thousands of volunteers across the American River Parkway by keeping them hydrated. 18,000 waters have been donated to support American River Parkway Foundation programs and special events since 2015.

Nestlé has also supported the Parkway Foundation's Invasive Plant Management Program with $50,000 in grants since 2011, helping to remove nonnative, invasive plants that inhibit wildlife and recreational uses.

Currently, Nestlé Waters' Sacramento warehouse is being certified through the Alliance for Water Stewardship, to formalize their efforts to become a water-friendly business. Nestlé’s next river cleanup is on July 22nd at the Howe Avenue Access!

Community
Recreate For Health
Public Speaking Art Yoga

Recreate for Health is focused on bringing local youth, who may not otherwise have access to recreation, to the outdoors for positive, healthy experiences. Over the week of June 19th, nearly twenty youth were able to relax both mentally and physically on the American River Parkway while participating in activities led by adults who are positive role models. These experiences occurred across the Parkway and included a public speaking class with B Street Theatre at the Campfire Outdoor Educational Site, an art class at Camp Pollock, a bike ride, a tour of the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, and a yoga class at Discovery Park.

The pilot program was supported by Dignity Health and is a collaborative partnership with the American River Parkway Foundation, Always Knocking, Hooked on Fishing, and Bike Lab. Click here to read an article about the camp from The Sacramento Bee.

Events
Solstice
Solstice

A very special thank you to our sponsors, guests, and volunteers for making the third annual Summer Solstice Dinner & Auction a wonderful success. 250 guests and 40 volunteers came together on Saturday, June 24th for a beautiful evening on the American River Parkway to support Sacramento's greatest recreational and natural civic amenity. $99,003 was raised at this year's dinner; proceeds will benefit American River Parkway Foundation programs and efforts to maintain and improve the American River Parkway.

A portion of the Summer Solstice proceeds will benefit the American River Parkway Foundation’s outdoor education programs at the Campfire Outdoor Educational Site. The Parkway Foundation manages maintenance and improvements to the site in River Bend Park to bring under-served youth to the American River Parkway. In 2016, 3,000 youth across Sacramento County experienced the Parkway through the Campfire Outdoor Educational Site.

Thank you to Tia Gemmell/Riverview Media Photography for photographing the 3rd annual Summer Solstice Dinner & Auction!

Visit our office (map) to check out beautiful photos of the Parkway! Each quarter we're featuring a local photographer with a passion for the Parkway. These photographs will be available to purchase, and proceeds benefit the Parkway Foundation.

This quarter we're featuring David Dawson, photographer and volunteer extraordinaire. David has been volunteering with the Parkway Foundation since 2003 (14 years!) and has dedicated more than 446 hours over the years. He volunteers alongside the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento as a Mile Steward of mile 6 north.

A quote from David on the value of the Parkway:
"The American River Parkway, close to home, meets my need, as described by John Muir who said, 'Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.'"
