Mile Stewards

What?

In 1993, the Parkway Foundation founded the “Adopt-the-Parkway” initiative to engage volunteers mile by mile. Volunteer stewards adopt each of the 23 miles of Parkway along both banks of the river. There are 46 Mile Stewards on the American River Parkway.

Why?

This program allows individuals, businesses, and organizations to have a close, personal stake in the well-being of the Parkway. Mile Stewards take on the challenge of cleaning and conserving the American River Parkway that so many love and use. Each year, Mile Stewards provide 3500+ hours of service and remove thousands of pounds of garbage from the Parkway!

What’s Involved?

Mile Stewards make a two-year commitment to serve at least 20 volunteer hours on their mile each quarter. Stewards complete clean-up, trail maintenance, weed removal, and report any issues on their mile.

Financial Mile Stewards

Financial mile sponsors make a two-year commitment to contribute $1,500 per year. This contribution covers the hard costs of the volunteer mile stewardship (volunteer coordination, tools, and equipment) that includes trash removal, invasive plants management, and trail maintenance. Sponsors and stewards are recognized on a Parkway sign located along the paved bike trail of “their” mile.

Thank you to our current and previous Mile Stewards! For information about joining the program, please contact ARPF at (916) 486-2773 or volunteer@arpf.org. The Mile Stewards Program document provides a succinct summary of the program.
