ARPF Achievements
Discovery Park
2019 is off to a strong start, thanks to 144 volunteers who donated 365.5 hours in January. They removed 4,826 lbs of trash, 2,117 invasive plants (French, Scotch, and Spanish broom), and 590 gallons of red sesbania seed pods from the Parkway. Groups joined us from High Tech High School, UC Davis Coastal Cleanup Crew, and the US Army. January 2019

Our Adopt-A-Mile program is essential to the health of the American River Parkway, providing volunteer and financial support for each of the Parkway's 23 miles on both sides of the river. Three miles are currently open for adoption:
  • Financial: Mile 4-South (behind REI & Costco off Exposition Blvd)
  • Volunteer: Mile 0-North (Discovery Park) and Mile 16-North (Ancil Hoffman Park)

Financial Sponsors fund the maintenance of a mile while Volunteer Stewards clean and maintain the mile. Both receive recognition via a sign with their name on the mile marker along the Jedediah Smith Memorial Bike Trail, and are invited to attend regular seminars and trainings with the ARPF.

Dean O'Brien

Dean O'Brien
Mee the President
Meet our 2019 Board President, Dean O'Brien! Dean is an avid cyclist and dedicated supporter of the American River Parkway Foundation. Since joining our Board of Directors in 2015, he has put in more than 250 hours chairing our Ride the Parkway committee; as board Secretary and Vice President; serving on our Marketing & Development, Finance, and Advocacy Committees; and volunteering at river cleanups on the lower Parkway. Read on for an introduction from Dean!

My name is Dean O’Brien and I am your American River Parkway Foundation (ARPF) Board President in 2019. I am a native West Sacramentan, and currently live near Discovery Park. I am a cycling advocate, bike commuter, and avid road cyclist, riding more than 10,000 miles a year with a majority of those miles logged out on the Parkway. My professional background is in business, and I have almost 15 years of experience in commercial lending and construction finance.

I got involved with the ARPF because I love Sacramento, and believe the Parkway is our crown jewel of civic amenities in the region. The Parkway is Sacramento’s backyard, and now more than ever it needs our stewardship and attention. I am most looking forward to engaging our local leaders and stakeholder groups in the coming years as the County of Sacramento moves forward with creating a Parkway Resource Management Plan (RMP). The RMP will qualify the Parkway for state and federal funding for programs that will help ensure future generations have a safe and clean place to experience nature, while leading an active lifestyle. I encourage all of you to volunteer your time or support the ARPF with a donation in 2019.

If I am not out on the Parkway, you will find me spending time with my family (Karen and Ray), coaching AAU basketball, or attending an Urban Land Institute event. I look forward to serving the American River Parkway Foundation and all of its stakeholders in the year ahead.

Corporate Volunteers
Corporate Volunteers
Did you know? Volunteering helps employees get healthier both physically and mentally, which benefits employers too. According to the UnitedHealth Group’s 2013 study, Doing Good is Good for You, “Employees who experience lower levels of stress are more present and engaged, which further reduces health care costs and elevates on-the-job performance.”
ARPF can help your team give back to Sacramento! The Parkway Foundation regularly works with businesses to put on volunteer events such as river cleanups, invasive plant removal, trail maintenance, infrastructure repairs/rebuilding projects, and special events. These are great team-building opportunities! Email our Community Engagement Manager to get started.
