SACRAMENTO, Calif. — You don’t need a plane ticket—or even a tank of gas—to escape to a natural oasis along the American River.
Paradise Beach sits in the heart of the American River Parkway, just beyond East Sacramento and less than a mile from Cal Expo and the busy Arden area. The bend in the river creates a sandy beach where visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities—or simply relax in the sun.
Walking trails wind through the park, including paved paths and dirt single-track trails. Some trails are currently closed for restoration, while others lead to and along the river.
On a cool morning, Paradise Beach is a popular place to walk the dog or enjoy a hike. Visitors can also access the bike trail connecting Glenn Hall Park with the American River.
By afternoon, the beach becomes a place to spread out a towel or chair, soak up the sun and read a book.
The American River also offers an opportunity to cool off. Loaner life jackets are available and encouraged for anyone entering the water.
“I go there all the time,” said Jules Baez of the American River Parkway Foundation. “We go walking, we take the dog, I ride my bike down there, and I’ve seen paddle boards and kayaks. It’s a great place.”
Parking and admission are free at Glenn Hall Park, located at 5211 Carlson Drive in Sacramento’s River Park neighborhood.
Paradise Beach is open from sunrise to sunset.
